Over dinner with friends, we started discussing why so many husbands cheat. We talked about all the general stuff — libido, they’re stupid, don’t understand the pressure put on women, don’t appreciate what wives give them, etc. We talked about how recent movies have started illustrating the wife’s role in the affairs. For instance, in Sex and the City, Miranda has been too busy for six months to be interest in sex, so off Steve goes. In The Women, Meg Ryan’s character has taken on too much and neglected her husband. In both cases, there were other, smarter choices the men could have made…but the choice they made was to have the affair.
Later that night, I started considering how much responsibility wives bear when their husbands engage in affairs, whether the affairs be physical, emotional, internet porn, etc. I don’t believe there is one simple answer. I think there are occasions where the wives are great but the husband is just a jerk. I think there are occasions when the wives have stopped showing appreciation and affection for the husband for whatever reason and the husband just want some attention. I think there are occasions where the wives are shrews and the husbands are just sticking around for the kids. I also think this all can go the other way, too.
But, then, for some reason, I started thinking about magazines. What do women read? Well…
When women are single, they read:

When women are married, they read:

Now, let’s take a look at the women on the covers. Both are definitely beautiful women. In general, if you showed these pictures to a man and said, “Who would you want to have sex with,” who do you think he would choose?
Hmmmm….
I’m not suggesting that Mothers should start dressing like the women on the cover of Cosmopolitan. Heck, most women don’t look like the models on the cover of Cosmopolitan.
However, maybe if more Mothers started dressing FUN instead of like a housewife, it would help foster intimacy and more sex. The bottom line is, men are visual creatures. While we can tout all we want about how looks don’t matter and it’s what’s on the inside that counts…well, men are just visual creatures.
Just a thought.
