WEEKEND MUSINGS: Blog Pleasing

While waiting for my husband to run into Lowes to grab some bolts, I sat in the car and used my iPhone to check in with the blogsphere. I saw a link to a post about what aspects of a blog make one blog writer not want to leave comments. They were all well-written, well-argued points which I completely enjoyed considering myself.

I don’t think that blogger will be stopping by here and leaving comments any time soon.

Why? Well, there are many aspects of my blog which do not meet her criteria. She and my blog simply are not a good match.

I certainly respect that her opinions as to which make a “readable” blog are not mine. That’s fine. I suspect she and I frequent different blogs, too. Fortunately, the number of blogs, as well as the variety of content, allows each of us to follow our own interests.

I appreciate advice regarding what makes a blog entertaining, inviting, informative, and worth following; I may not take it, but that does not diminish the value of the suggestions.

At a certain point, if I begin to think only of pleasing my readers, I cannot remain true to myself or to the mission of the blog. Yes, I prefer to be read, and, yes, I have taken steps to reach what I hope is an interested audience. If I take the approach of marketing and writing my blog strictly to reach the greatest number of readers, however, the quality of the content is going to suffer.

I’d much rather put the best of myself here.

I hope that readers enjoy my blog. I want to be helpful and entertaining at the same time. I also understand that my blog is not going appeal to everyone. I may never have a large readership by employing this philosophy; however, I simply cannot blog any other way.

I have to be me.
